Scott Trench- The World Opens
Note: This marks my first of many Fast Fives where I talk about 5 important lessons that I have learned from each person that I have interviewed. Each post will start with an introduction which will include some details about the person and where I was in my journey when I interviewed them.
Overview: Scott Trench is the CEO of BiggerPockets, a Real Estate company that provides resources to over 2.5 million investors. After attending Vanderbilt and getting a job that was not his favorite, Scott decided to join BiggerPockets which was a smaller company at the time. After its rapid ascent, Trench would become CEO in 2018 a position he has held ever since. In addition, in 2017 Scott wrote a best-selling book "Set for Life" which details how younger individuals can become financially independent.
Where I was: Scott's interview was my first one and will always have a special place in my heart. I was pretty nervous beforehand but Scott's cool and calm demeanor gave me confidence and allowed the interview to run smoothly. Looking back, I realize that if it was not for this amazing first interview, I would not have the confidence to interview more than 30 other outstanding individuals.
Fast Five (Lessons):
1. As a first time leader it is essential to define what "good" is in whatever organization you are joining.
2. Financial freedom by the accumulation of assets (real estate and other means) can give people the opportunity to follow their passion projects if they so want to.
3. Scott stressed that in order to potentially invest in real estate early the number one key is to stockpile cash to help with the downpayment
4. To be both a better leader and a better person Scott recommended reading "How to win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie, "The Compound Effect" by Darren Hardy, and to read the biographies of great individuals like the Founding Fathers.
5. If you are a relentless self-educator and read and learn on your own time, there is a high chance that you will be in the top 1% of whatever field you end up choosing.
Conclusion: I learned a great deal from Scott. Not only did I learn more about real estate and how to potentially invest when I am older, but how even if you are very successful, you can still be down to earth and respectful to whoever you may be speaking to. I'm so glad I had this opportunity.
